D’Youville Assists in Quest to Treat Opioid Epidemic

Buffalo, New York – November 27, 2017 – In D'Youville's continued approach to help care for the community and region, the College is holding "Opioid Crisis in WNY Part I: Community Intervention and Narcan Training." The event will take place on the D’Youville campus, Monday, December 4, at 6 PM.

Presenters include Gale Burstein, M.D., Health Commissioner of Erie County, Debra Smith, parent advocate and member of the Opioid Epidemic Task Force, and Cheryll Moore, R.N., Coordinator of the Erie County Opiate Epidemic Task Force & D'Youville Nursing School alumnus.

Following the presentations, approximately 50 attendees will undergo Narcan training. Attendees are expected to include D’Youville students and faculty, members of Science Demands Action and the Erie & Niagara Area Health Education Center.

“We hope this training will increase awareness of the opioid epidemic and offer ways for the community to help,” said Christopher J. Jadoch, RPh, JD, D’Youville associate professor of Pharmacy Law and president of the New York State Council of Health-system Pharmacists.

Jadoch has been a tireless advocate of treating the effects of the pharmaceutical industry beyond just the patient including drug takebacks and assisting D'Youville's partnership with the recently rebranded Buffalo Niagara Waterkeeper.

The Erie County Health Department will distribute Narcan kits after the training.

Erie County offers a 24/7 Addictions Treatment Hotline: 716-831-7007, providing access to support and services to those struggling with any drug addiction and their loved ones. The county is projecting more than 300 opioid overdose deaths for 2017.
