Five Spartans Named All-Conference in Basketball
Buffalo, New York – February 28, 2012 – Three men's basketball players and one women's player from D'Youville College were recognized by the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference today when the All-Conference teams were released today by Commissioner Donna Ledwin.
Named to the AMCC men's basketball First-Team was senior guard Raysean Johnson (Buffalo, NY/Grover Cleveland). Johnson led all AMCC players in scoring this season at 23.1 points per game and has been among the top-10 in scoring all season among NCAA Division III players. Five times this season Johnson scored 30-plus points in a game, including a school record 42 points January 8 at Franciscan University. This is the second career All-Conference nod for Johnson after an AMCC Third-Team selection in 2009-10.
Two more men's basketball Spartans were named to AMCC Third-Team: senior guard Greg Osika (Depew, NY/Depew) and junior center Patrick Coyle (North Chili, NY/Bishop Kearney).
Osika capped his career with his first All-Conference selection after averaging a career-high 14.1 points per game and leading the conference with 3.3 steals per game. Osika is sixth nationally among NCAA Division III players in steals and it is the third-straight year he has been the AMCC leader in that category.
For the second-straight season Coyle is a Third-Team selection. This season the six-ten center averaged a career-high 11.9 points per game to go with 9.7 rebounds and 4.8 blocked shots. The AMCC shot block leader for the third-straight season, Coyle will finish first or second in that category this season after being the Division III National leader in 2010-11.
After back to back six win seasons, D'Youville went 10-16 overall and 10-8 in conference play under first-year coach Earl Schunk. The Spartans qualified for the AMCC Tournament as the #5 seed, their first league post-season appearance since joining the conference in 2008-09.
Selected to the AMCC Second-Team in women's basketball was D'Youville College senior forward Hannah Norton (Wyoming, NY/Pavilion) and selected to the Third-Team was senior guard Kaitlyn Roland (Victor, NY/Victor).
Norton led all AMCC players in field-goal percentage making 56.3% of her shots, was fourth in the league in scoring at 14.8 points per game, and grabbed 10.0 rebounds per game good for third in the conference. It is the first-career All-Conference selection in basketball for Norton. The multi-sport athlete has three All-Conference selections in softball.
Roland earns her first career All-Conference selection after averaging 12.8 points per game, good for eighth in the AMCC, and finished seventh in the conference in three-point field-goals per game (1.5) and fourteenth in field-goal percentage (.380).
