The recent Interfaith Circles event, "The Intersection of Religion, Medicine, and Culture: Fasting," resonated deeply with attendees, illuminating the spiritual, personal, and practical dimensions of this ancient practice. Beyond the physical aspects, the event revealed how fasting serves as a powerful tool for self-reflection and community engagement.

A central theme that emerged was the spiritual significance of fasting in both Muslim and Christian traditions. As participants learned, fasting is not merely about abstaining from food and drink; it's a journey of self-discovery and gratitude. Participants learned that it cultivates a profound appreciation for everyday blessings often taken for granted, such as water. It also encourages introspection, prompting individuals to "check themselves" and strive for personal improvement.

Professor Craig Tyson, Chair of Humanities and Social Sciences, emphasized the role of self-control and discipline in this spiritual process, stating that these qualities are essential for "pushing spiritual forward." He also discussed that if someone is unable to fast, there are alternative ways to fulfill the spiritual obligations, such as making up the fast later, donating to those in need, or actively helping others.

The event also highlighted the practical implications of fasting, particularly in the realm of healthcare. Julia Vicaretti, Vital Pharmacy’s Resident, provided valuable insights from a pharmacy perspective. A key takeaway was the critical importance of medication timing during fasting periods. She stressed the need for clear communication with patients, emphasizing the importance of discussing medication schedules and potential side effects. "Promote conversations with your clients," she advised, highlighting the importance of patient-centered care.

The diverse perspectives shared by the panelists – Naheed Ali-Sayeed, Nutrition & Dietetics Program Director; Maoj Awad, Lab Manager Chemistry; Julia Vicaretti, and Professor Tyson – created a rich tapestry of understanding. Maoj Awad’s statement, "people underestimate what their body is capable of," continued to echo throughout the discussions, reminding attendees of the inherent resilience and adaptability of the human body.

The Interfaith Circles initiative successfully fostered a space for meaningful dialogue, promoting a deeper understanding of diverse perspectives and fostering a more empathetic and informed campus community.
