Student Responsibilities
At D’Youville University, academic advising is a collaborative process which requires active participation from both students and advisors. As a student, there are several key responsibilities that help ensure you make the most of your academic advisement experience and stay on track to meet your educational and career goals.
By fulfilling these responsibilities, students take ownership of their academic journey and contribute to a productive advising relationship.
BE PROACTIVE AND TAKE INITIATIVE
- Schedule Regular Meetings: It is the student’s responsibility to schedule advising appointments at least once a year during open advisement weeks. However, it is encouraged that you meet with your advisor at least once a semester.
- Prepare for Meetings: Before your advising session, take time to review your academic progress, course requirements, and bring any questions you may have. This will ensure that your meeting is focused and productive.
- Monitor your Academic Progress: Regularly check your academic standing, GPA, and progress toward degree completion in Self-Service Student Portal. This will help to identify any potential issues early on.
BE PREPARED TO DISCUSS YOUR GOALS
- Set Academic and Career Goals: Reflect on your academic and career aspirations and be prepared to discuss these with your advisor. Whether it’s choosing a major or planning for graduate school, having a clear vision will help guide advising conversations.
- Consider Long-Term Goals: Think about how your current course selections and academic activities (e.g. internships, extracurriculars) align with your future career or educational goals. Share this with your advisor for tailored advice.
TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR DECISIONS
- Understand Your Degree Requirements: Familiarize yourself with the degree requirements for your program of study (e.g. general education courses, major courses, electives) and be aware of any pre-requisite or co-requisite courses you will need to complete.
- Know Important Academic Dates: Stay aware of important deadlines such as course registration, add/drop/withdrawal deadlines, and graduation application deadlines. Use the academic calendar to stay on track.
- Understand University and Program Policies: Familiarize yourself with D’Youville’s academic and program policies (e.g. grading, academic probation, withdrawal procedures). It is essential you understand the consequences of decisions such as course withdrawal, academic standing, and GPA requirements.
BE HONEST AND TRANSPARENT
- Be Honest About Challenges: If you are struggling with a particular course, time management, personal issues, or anything that may affect your academic performance, it is important to be open and honest with your advisor. Advisors are there to help you navigate challenges and connect you with additional resources.
- Disclose Relevant Information: If you have specific needs or accommodations, or if you are facing personal or academic challenges, be transparent with your advisor so they can help connect you with the appropriate resources.
ACTIVELY ENGAGE IN YOUR ADVISING MEETINGS
- Ask Questions: If something is unclear during your advising session – whether it’s about your academic plan, career options, or university policies – don’t hesitate to ask questions. Advisors are there to clarify and help you understand your options.
- Take Notes: During your advising session, take notes so you can refer to them later. This helps you to remember key points, deadlines, and action items discussed during the meeting.
BE ACCOUNTABLE FOR YOUR ACADEMIC SUCCESS
- Track Your Own Progress: Regularly review your academic transcript and degree audit in Self-Service to track your progress toward meeting graduation requirements. This will help you stay aware of any missed courses or credits.
- Seek Help When Needed: If you find yourself struggling academically, socially, or emotionally, reach out for help. D’Youville offers various resources including tutoring, counseling services, and academic workshops that can support your success. Your advisor can guide you to these resources if needed.
COMMUNICATE EFFECTIVELY WITH YOUR ADVISOR
- Be on Time for Appointments: Arrive on time to meetings or cancel/notify your advisor ahead of time if you need to reschedule.
- Respond to Emails and Communication: If your advisor reaches out to you with updates, reminders, or follow-up information, respond in a timely manner. Open communication is essential to building a productive advising relationship.
- Stay in Touch: If there are any significant changes to your academic progress, goals, or personal circumstances (e.g. switching majors, health issues, personal challenges), keep your advisor informed. They can offer additional guidance and adjustments if needed.
UNDERSTAND AND UTILIZE CAMPUS RESOURCES
Know Campus Resources: Your advisor can provide valuable guidance, but it’s important to also know about the other resources available to you.
TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR ACADEMIC INTEGRITY
Uphold Academic Integrity: It is essential that you understand and adhere to D’Youville’s Academic Integrity Policies. Cheating, plagiarism, and other forms of dishonesty can have serious academic consequences. Your advisor can guide you on how to maintain academic integrity and avoid common pitfalls.
Your academic advising experience at D’Youville University is a partnership between you and your advisor. Remember, your advisor is here to guide and support you, but your engagement and proactive approach are key to ensuring that you make the most of this valuable relationship.
