Occupational therapists are skilled healthcare professionals who work with patients to regain or develop daily life skills.
As an occupational therapist, you can work in many areas from neonatal intensive care units to skilled nursing facilities, to help patients restore function. Occupational therapy is expected to experience rapid growth as a profession over the next decade as the demand for various services increases, especially among the aged.
You will be prepared to become a registered occupational therapist by taking the National Certification Examination for Occupational Therapists, administered by the National Board for the Certification of Occupational Therapists (NBCOT). Most states, including New York, require licensure to practice. State licensure is typically based on the results of the NBCOT certification exam, but must be applied for separately in the state in which you plan to practice.

ACOTE Accreditation
The entry-level occupational therapy master’s degree program is fully approved and registered by the New York State Education Department. The program offers two curriculum paths (BS/MS-OT & MS-OT) that culminate in the entry-level occupational therapy master’s degree. The program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA).

Graduates of the program will be eligible to sit for the national certification examination for the occupational therapist administered by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT). After successful completion of this exam, the individual will be an Occupational Therapist, Registered (OTR). In addition, all states require licensure in order to practice; however, state licenses are usually based on the results of the NBCOT Certification Examination. Note that a felony conviction may affect a graduate’s ability to sit for the NBCOT certification examination or attain state licensure.
The ACOTE accreditation standards provide the basis for the occupational therapy degree program competencies.

The D'Youville Occupational Therapy Program is also approved by The World Federation of Occupational Therapists (WFOT).
