Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine

Graduates of Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree programs often go on to practice in a wide range of medical specialties, including primary care, internal medicine, pediatrics, emergency medicine, surgery, psychiatry. Whether pursuing careers in private practice, clinic or hospital-based medicine, academic teaching and research, or public health, DOs are well-prepared to lead and innovate in the ever-evolving field of healthcare.

What does the training include?

The DO degree is a four year program. During the first two years, students receive a strong preclinical foundation in of biomedical sciences, as well as training in the foundations of medicine and clinical reasoning. As a cornerstone of osteopathic education, students learn to diagnose and treat musculoskeletal dysfunctions via osteopathic manipulative medicine and are often paired with specialized practitioners to train in simulated environments, research labs, case-based discussions, and via self-directed learning modules. Students rotate through a series of clinical sites during the third and fourth years of their education, learning through practice in a wide variety of different healthcare settings.
