$100K NEH Grant to D’Youville Will Help Provide Pathway for Humanities-Based Healthcare

BUFFALO, NEW YORK – The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) has awarded D’Youville a $99,857 Humanities Connections Grant to support implementation of a new interdisciplinary Health Humanities bachelor’s degree program.

Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-26) congratulated D’Youville on receiving the grant, saying, “The new Health Humanities program will provide an alternative pathway and an academic home to students from diverse backgrounds who are seeking a future in the health professions.”

The grant will assist D’Youville in fully implementing a bachelor’s degree in Health Humanities, graduating students better prepared to address critical shortages in the Western New York healthcare workforce.

“The Health Humanities major will help students develop a firm understanding of how and why different belief systems, cultural biases, ethnic origins, family structures, and a host of other culturally determined factors influence the manner in which people experience illness,” says Gina Camodeca, PhD, principal investigator for the grant and program director.

Immersion in these themes, Camodeca says, will prepare students to care for all patient populations with sensitivity, equity, and dignity.

D’Youville is the first school in Western New York and only the third school in New York State to offer a major in health humanities. Students will have experiential learning opportunities in D’Youville’s new Health Professions HUB.
