D’Youville Awarded $1.3 Million for Upward Bound Program

Buffalo, New York – March 30, 2017 – D’Youville College has been awarded a five-year grant of $257,474 annually from the U.S. Department of Education to promote student readiness for post-secondary programs in New York State. The total grant totals $1.287 million.

In a joint notice from U.S. Senators Charles E. Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand announcing the more than $9 million awarded, they said the funding, allocated through the Upward Bound program, will be used to bring more access and support services to college-readiness programs throughout the State.

The Upward Bound program provides fundamental college preparation support to high school students from low-income families and from families in which neither parent holds a bachelor’s degree.

“We are very excited about the grant. It once again provides a great opportunity to work with International Prep High School and Leonardo da Vinci High School, located here on our campus, and increase the number of high school students going onto college,” said Dr. Lorrie A. Clemo, D’Youville president.

“Obtaining a college degree is a good deal by any measure. The Upward Bound program helps qualified students who might not otherwise attend or complete a college degree program prepare for a successful college experience. It is great news for our students and our community.”

In its application for the grant, D’Youville pointed out the City of Buffalo is a region consistently identified and ranked as one of the poorest big cities in the nation. The College’s Upward Bound program will provide services to 57 students attending the International Prep and Leonardo da Vinci schools, according to grant author William McKeever of the College’s Institutional Advancement Office.

“Upward Bound has been a staple of D’Youville College pre-collegiate outreach in the City of Buffalo over the last 10 years,” said Antwan K. Barlow, Upward Bound director at the College. "I am very excited and happy that we have received a new grant award that will keep us providing an impact on the community for another five years.”
