D’Youville Awards $4,000 for Second Annual Healthcare Hackathon Competition
Buffalo, New York – October 16, 2020 – D’Youville hosted its second annual Healthcare Hackathon: Solving Healthcare Problems sponsored by Independent Health last week, awarding $4,000 in prizes.
A unique virtual competition that partnered teams with community healthcare providers to develop solutions to our community's most plaguing healthcare problems, this year's hackathon saw ten teams working to craft novel solutions for their partner institutions, attend virtual events, and participate in active, online learning experiences. After one week, they pitched their solutions to local healthcare leaders to compete for prizes.
All of the teams were assigned to a challenge statement, which included topics in:
- Consumer Experience
- Partnerships
- Accessibility to Care
- Prevention and Health Promotion
Three overall teams were chosen as the winners by a panel of judges after pitching their ideas in just 3-5 minute presentations. The judges included D’Youville’s academic deans, as well as members of the President’s and Leadership Councils. Judges evaluated each presentation entry based on the quality of the presentation, the viability of the presented solution, and overall creativity.
Winners, below, were selected and awarded different monetary prizes.
The third-place winner was Team Wise Walker, which included Mira Wassim and Lama Moukheiber, which were awarded $500 prize money. Team Wise Walker developed a solution to the challenge statement addressing prevention and health promotion. Their solution was to create a smart-insole for patients with possible gait instability and assess gait patterns to allow for positive adaptive change.
The second-place winner was Team Bulls and Bots, which included Danny Della Posta, Samantha Lang, and Anubhav Ghosh, who were awarded $1000 prize money. Team Bulls and Bots developed a solution to the challenge statement of addressing the consumer experience to improve health outcomes. Their solution streamlined access to for those with Opioid Use Disorders to de-stigmatize this condition to implement positive behavior change. View their submission below: Bulls and Bots
The first-place winner was Team BME Solutions, which included Andra Sullivan, Bo Ibitayo, and Samantha Seymour, who were awarded $2500 in prize money. Team BME Solutions developed a solution to the challenge statement of accessibility to healthcare. Their solution utilizes telehealth and/or wearable technology to increase patients’ access to healthcare. View their submissions:
