Founder of Haiti Rehab Project to Hold Forum at D’Youville
Buffalo, New York – April 04, 2017 – Ginger Oliver, founder of the Haiti Rehab Project, will hold a forum at D’Youville College on Wednesday, April 12 to educate the Western New York community about the project and to support her initiatives to address the needs of people in Haiti. The people of Haiti are still recovering from the catastrophic earthquake of January 2010.
Oliver is a physical therapist based in Utica, N.Y.
D’Youville students, under the supervision of D’Youville faculty, will help train individuals from Haiti for hands-on training in healthcare approaches and techniques they can utilize at home. “This will provide phenomenal inter-professional education and collaboration,” according to Sarah P. Pictor, clinical associate professor of Physical Therapy at D’Youville.
Efforts to reach out to the local community of prosthetists and orthotists to contribute to the training are underway. “This is because many of the injuries sustained by the Haitians resulted in amputation,” Pictor said.
“If well supported, we see this initiative having long term sustainable effects.”
The 7.0 magnitude earthquake affected some three million people and an estimated 160,000 individuals died, according to a University of Michigan study.
The forum will be held in the Kavinoky Theatre on the D’Youville campus from 1:00 to 2:00 PM and is free and open to the public.
