Traditional D’Youville Baccalaureate Ceremony Set for Friday, May 19

Buffalo, New York – May 09, 2017 – D’Youville College will hold its traditional Baccalaureate and Hooding Ceremony on Friday, May 19, 2017 at 7:30 PM in Holy Angels Church, 348 Porter Avenue, corner of Fargo Avenue.

The centuries old and colorful ceremony features graduating students and college faculty members in full academic regalia marching in procession from the front of the Koessler Administration Building on Porter Avenue to the adjacent church entrance.

At the ceremony, each graduating student will be hooded by a faculty member in the student’s discipline indicating the student has completed the requirements for either a bachelor’s degree or an advanced degree.

Lorrie A. Clemo, D’Youville president, will speak at the ceremony.

Families and friends of the graduates and D’Youville faculty and staff will fill the entire church for this special and unique ceremony. A reception in the College Center follows.

The Baccalaureate Ceremony traditionally is held the day before the college commencement which will be held Saturday, May 20 at Kleinhans Music Hall.

The baccalaureate ceremony derives from the medieval European custom of presenting candidates for the degree of Bachelor (bacca) with laurels (lauri) for “sermonic oration.” The ceremony is a service of worship in celebration of thanksgiving for lives dedicated to learning and wisdom, according to a number of sources.

It is believed to have originated at the University of Oxford in 1432.
