D’Youville Professor Awarded Major Fellowship

Buffalo, New York – April 11, 2017 – The Health Foundation of Western and Central New York has awarded a D’Youville professor an 18-month Health Leadership Fellowship (HLF) to help develop and sustain a network of collaborative professionals who will design and lead a more responsive and effective healthcare program.

Dr. Renee B. Cadzow, assistant professor in the department of Health Services Administration and director of the Center for Research on Physical Activity, Sport, & Health, will work with professionals from health-related and safety-net organizations throughout western and central New York.

The part-time program is designed to allow participants to continue their current work within their organization while receiving focused and intensive leadership development skills.

“I’m excited to participate in this opportunity,” Dr. Cadzow said. “A few of my colleagues in partnering community based organizations, as well as here at D’Youville in my department, have been a part of past HLF cohorts. I anticipate substantial growth in my leadership skills from the mentoring, networking, and problem-solving that are aspects of this fellowship.”

Dr. Cadzow holds a PhD in Biological Anthropology from the State University of New York at Buffalo and joined D’Youville in 2012. She conducted health disparities research at the University at Buffalo's Primary Care Research Institute for eight years and served as evaluation director of the NYS AHEC System for four years at the same time.

Her specialized research and evaluation efforts focus on community health, particularly maternal and child health and the health of school-age children. It includes both healthcare practice-based research as well as community-based participatory research.

Dr. Cadzow is the board co-chair and a trainer at the Community Health Worker Network of Buffalo and a board member of the Buffalo Prenatal-Perinatal Network. She is an active member of the Buffalo Public Schools Health Council and several of its associated committees.

At D’Youville, she teaches and advises students in the undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs in the Health Services Administration program, serves as graduate council secretary, and is a member of the College’s wellness committee.

“What’s most important, I am a mom to four young children who serve as motivation and inspiration to increase health equity in our region.”

The fellowship program runs from September 2017 to April to 2019.

The Health Foundation for Western and Central N.Y. was founded in 2002 and works with community partners to design and support programs to improve healthcare for the most vulnerable and underserved populations.

The organization has awarded more than 400 grants totaling more than $30 million to fund programs in 16 neighboring counties.
